Google results ranked most relevant by WebmasterBrain.com's Search Engine Experiment

Supporting SquirrelNet's ranking of Google as  #1 in our Top 20 Search Engines list, WebmasterBrain.com has ranked Google #1 in terms of search engine relevancy by head-to-head-to-head blind testing against Yahoo and MSN.  Google is listed as having the most relevant results 39% of the time vs. 34% for Yahoo and 29% for MSN Search.

Here is the Search Engine Experiment.  Just type in your search phrase, hit Search and you'll see 3 results from each of Google, Yahoo and MSN.  After visiting some of the sites, you can vote on which of the search engines provides the most relevant results.  The search engines are listed unbranded, so you don't know what you're picking.  This lends credibility to the test.

Of course, the user experience at the various sites can also improve the searching experience.  While Google has the most relevant results, it also has the best user experience.  Thus, in the real world, this explains why Google is preferred by an ever larger margin.

By the way, SquirrelNet also ranks the Google SafeSearch for Kids as the #1 search engine for kids.

Yahoo's 10th Birthday Netrospective

Yahoo turned 10 years old a few months ago.  Here's a so-called "netrospective" capturing 100 moments of their 10 years online.

Yahoo's Movie Recommender is Very Cool

The Yahoo Movies Recommender is a great free service where, after telling Yahoo some movies you like, the recommender spits out a list of recommended movies.  The recommendations include movies in theaters, on TV, and new DVD releases.  On top of that, the recommender also provides a list of "Movie Fans Like You". 

What's even cooler is that the rater and recommender are fully integrated into Yahoo Movies.  This means not only that you can browse Yahoo Movies and rate movies at your leisure, but also that it will usually try to predict if whether or not that you'll actually like a movie you haven't seen (see "You'll probably like this movie" on pic to the left).

The recommender isn't always perfect, but at least it does offer up interesting recommendations.

Visual Google vs. Yahoo Comparison

Here's a cool site created by langreiter.com that makes a visual comparison of search results between Google and Yahoo.  The site lists Google's results for the search across the top, represented by circles, while putting Yahoo's results on the bottom.  Instances where Google and Yahoo have the same results are indicated by a blue line connecting two solid blue dots.

Yahoo Mail soon at 1GB with improved search

Check out the following Yahoo Mail announcement.  Yahoo will now offer Yahoo Mail users 1 gigabyte of storage for free in addition to improving the ability for users to search their own email (a nice feature if you store hundreds if not thousands of email messages like me).
