Until recently, I viewed the UMPC (Ultra-Mobile PC) category as an over-hyped, too-expensive gadget. Most devices cost about $2000 and really don't scream out "use me". However, in late October the Asus Eee PC debuted. It's a super-small sub-$400 laptop with a 7" screen. A bit small, but it's smaller than a book and fits easily wherever you go.
Important to me, it has a Flash hard drive. Thus, there are no moving parts making it easier to carry around. I have a super-think Dell Latitude now, but it's so fragile that I have to carry it around like a newborn baby. While it's not a supercomputer, it is well-equipped to let someone "get by" in a super-mobile way in this web-enabled world.
Interestingly, the device isn't overly being touted as a UMPC -- although that's what most people are labeling it as.
