According to the United States Department of Justice, a whopping 0.726% of the US population has been incarcerated. This compares to 0.142% for England, 0.091% for France and 0.058% for Japan. Thus, the incarceration rate for the US is about twelve times higher than that of Japan.
Speaking of twelve, 12.6% of black males in their late twenties are currently incarcerated, 3.6% for Hispanic males and 1.7% for whites.
Women are the fastest growing segment of those currently jailed.
