Dogpile unveils MissingPieces and SearchSpy

Dogpile recently added a new feature and changed the way their web search results are displayed.  First, their Missing Pieces tool shows you that the overlap in the "top 12" results between Google, Yahoo and Ask Jeeves is smaller than what you might think.  Unfortunately, this application is merely a visual tool and won't allow you to click through to the resulting sites.

Next, they changed how their meta-search results are displayed.  Now, instead of displaying the results between the different search engines sequentially, they will instead shuffle the results so that what you see is a combined list.  However, this is something that Metacrawler has been doing for a long time, so Dogpile is basically admitting that their results page wasn't as user-friendly as Metacrawler.  It's for this reason that Dogpile does not appear in SquirrelNet.com's Top 20 Search Engines list.

Dogpile will now also allow you to compare listings of search engines side-by-side.

Finally, a tool which Dogpile has that is interesting is called SearchSpy.  This tool enables you to see what things people are currently searching for.
